Hello there everyone! You may have noticed I have not been very active in the last few days either on here or on social media that is because of a little surprise acute appendicitis. So I was in the hospital for a few days to have surgery and just now getting back on my feet. Instead of doing journal entries this week I have decided to give you some updates! I get asked all the time how I am doing and what I am up to. I still can’t share my weight with you or full body images but I can let you know how I am doing and update you on my journey a little bit.
The biggest news right now is that I have had a bit of a setback. On February 2nd I had to have my appendix removed. I woke up in horrible pain Saturday and after trying to tough it out for most of the day broke down and went to the ER. After being transferred to Edmond, OK they discovered it was my appendix and surgery was set for Sunday. The surgery went well. I stayed in ICU (due to undiagnosed sleep apnea making my oxygen levels drop) for two days after surgery and then was released home. So now I am home recovering. Very sore but doing well.
I am embracing my diet. I have moved on to solid regular foods now and I am working daily to learn the best foods for my new stomach. I have started meal prepping some on the weekends to make cooking easier on busy days. At the suggestion of my trainer, I am roasting veggies to add to meals. I grill some chicken and keep it in broth to easily grab for a quick meal or add to veggies or riced cauliflower for a yummy dish.
I kinda feel like I’m relearning how to eat. I had to learn to slow down, chew well, and choose healthy options. If you are wondering what my diet is like it’s like most bariatric patients. High protein foods that are low in fat and low in carbs. I have cut out sweets completely from my diet before surgery. No carbonated drinks. I am also drinking 96 ounces of water a day. It’s a lot to remember but it makes a huge difference in your health and on the scale.
I have found a new doctor and an amazing nutritionist in his office that is helping me learn what to eat and how to eat correctly. They have a great team of professionals that I can contact at any time which is so helpful.
I am getting out there and working out at least 5 days a week. I have been swapping between water aerobics and walking on the track. I have a trainer and she is helping me slowly build up my stamina and endurance. I started out only being able to walk about 5 minutes at a time now I can walk 25 minutes and over half a mile.
I love water aerobics. This class is no joke though trust me. I am sore after every class. Every muscle in my body is usually screaming at me but it’s a good kind of soreness. You know you worked hard and that you worked all your muscle groups by the end of the class but it doesn’t feel like work during the class.
I’m a little upset that now that I have had to have my appendix out that it will slow my progress in this area. I won’t be able to swim for a month and will have to take it easy on everything else for a week or two. Kinda feels like I’ll be starting over again. That’s a big bummer. I’m up for the challenge though.
Finally, I am working on healthy living activities. A big part of my weight problems stems from depression and anxiety so I am working on learning healthy ways to cope. I am going to my wonderful counselor every week to work on these issues. I am also getting out of the house and being active.
I have taken up crochet to help me deal with boredom and keep my mind and my hands busy when I have downtime at night. That has been a lot of fun and I have learned a lot. It really has helped me keep cravings and negative thoughts out of my head. I highly suggest it if you struggle in this area. You can see a couple of my projects above in the photos.
We are also getting out of the house a lot. We took a family painting class. I have done a few classes on my own as well. Painting is so cathartic and relaxing. I am attending family events and school activities again. Going out and doing daily chores like shopping, chores around the house, and just getting up and walking more. It has really helped with my weight loss and just making me feel better in general.
